Torrington and Merton receive gift towards Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations

Great Torrington Town Council and Merton Parish Council have been given £500 pounds each towards community celebrations or projects to mark the Queen’s Jubilee this year. 

The donation has come from the Lord Clinton Charitable Trust which seeks to support worthy causes in Devon. The Trust is donating £500 to eleven parish and town councils on the Clinton Devon Estates across North and East Devon. 

Torrington and Merton councilors were informed of the gift by letter and are now being asked to write to the Trust with details of how they plan to spend the money for community celebrations. 

Alongside the charity donations, Clinton Devon Estates are planting a Jubilee Wood in East Devon, near the village of Newton Poppleford, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. The new wood is on a three hectare site (7.4 acres) and will be planted with around 6000 Douglas fir and ash saplings by the landowner and with the help of local communities. The tree planting is part of the Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods initiative.
